5 Recruiting Myths That Are Costing Your Family Offers
Recruiting has rules, timelines, and math — and most families learn them a year too late. Here are the five myths we hear most, and what's actually true.
Myth 1: “If he's good enough, they'll find him.”
College staffs are small and their time is spent on athletes who are easy to evaluate: film they can find, numbers they can trust, contact info that works. Talent that can't be found doesn't get recruited — it gets remembered by the local paper. Visibility is a skill. Treat it like one.
Myth 2: “Recruiting starts junior year.”
Junior year is when offers show up. The evaluating starts much earlier — coaches build watchlists off freshman and sophomore film, camp lists, and transcripts. A 2028 with clean film and a real GPA is on somebody's board right now. If you wait until the varsity highlight tape is “ready,” you're joining a line that formed two years ago.
Myth 3: “The transcript can wait.”
Ask any college coach what kills more recruitments than a slow forty: grades. A 3.5 GPA opens doors a 4.4 forty can't, because the coach can develop speed — he cannot fix your transcript. The classroom is a recruiting tool. Use it.
Myth 4: “Coaches recruit through DMs.”
Coaches notice on social media. They work in email. A clear subject line — class year, position, height/weight, school, state — with film linked gets opened, filed, and forwarded around a staff. A DM gets a like if you're lucky. Send the boring email. Boring wins.
Myth 5: “The highlight tape should show everything.”
A coach decides in about 90 seconds whether to keep watching. Your best five plays go first — not chronological order, not the whole season, not saving the best for last. If play one doesn't make him lean in, plays two through forty never get seen.
The pattern
Every myth on this list costs the same thing: time. And recruiting is a timed game. The families who win it aren't the ones with the most talent — they're the ones who made that talent easy to find, easy to trust, and easy to contact.
